“Dee, this is Sandra Bailey. I don’t know if you remember me.

We met a couple of weeks ago when you were here in New York.

I’m a friend of Karlie’s.”

“Sandy. Of course I remember. How are you? What a nice surprise.” Dee struggled to match a face with the voice and name.

Gradually an image of a fortysomething, graying, thin woman came into focus. A quiet, intelligent woman with an easy smile. “Is this about Karlie? Is she okay? I was just there. She seemed fine.”

“She’s fine, but something’s come up that could be a problem.

Rob’s dead.”

Relief briefly engulfed Dee before the full impact of the comment penetrated. “Good heavens, what happened?”

“The police came by this morning. They said he was murdered.”

“The police? Murdered. The bastard deserved to die.” Realizing how callous she sounded, she quickly said, “I’m sorry. That sounded awful. I was afraid you were calling to say something had happened to Karlie. I’m not sorry he’s dead.”

“I agree with you, but that’s not why I’m calling. When the police were here, I had the feeling they think Karlie may have had something to do with his death. They didn’t have a lot of information, but it was the questions they were asking.”

“My God. I can’t believe this. I guess I better be careful of what I say or I’ll be investigated. What makes them think Karlie had anything to do with it? How is she doing?”

“We don’t know. Karlie is sleeping right now. She’s going down to the station in a little while with her attorney. They want to question her and get her statement later this afternoon.”

“A statement? They can’t think she had anything to do with it.” “There’s no way she could have, but there is no telling what the police will come up with. There’s something else.” Sandy hesitated but needed to share her fears. “You remember when Karlie nearly fell into traffic? I didn’t think it was an accident. Something similar happened at the university. We were walking down the stairs and some guy rushed by us. Karlie stumbled and would have gone flying
